Zusammenfassung - Summary

Die Soziale Arbeit als Profession und Wissenschaft kennt eine fast unüberschaubare Vielzahl an Methoden, Verfahren und Techniken. Manche davon sind aus benachbarten Fachbereichen entliehen oder von diesen abgeleitet, andere wurden aus den Theorien der Sozialen Arbeit entwickelt oder aus der Berufsgeschichte übernommen.

Die Art der Darstellung der verschiedenen Methoden ist so unübersichtlich wie ihre Anzahl. In der vorliegenden Fachliteratur finden sich zum Teil widersprechende Ordnungs- und Gliederungsversuche, die mehr der Systematik der jeweiligen Veröffentlichung folgen, als einer systematischen Darstellung des Handlungswissens unserer Profession und Disziplin zu dienen.

Eben hier setzt diese Masterarbeit an. Warum sind Methoden für die Soziale Arbeit so wichtig? In welchem Bezugsrahmen stehen die Methoden zur Profession und zur Disziplin? Auf welche Metatheorien, ethische Grundhaltungen und Theorien der Sozialen Arbeit beziehen sie sich? Welche Methoden der Sozialen Arbeit gibt es? Wie lässt sich diese Vielzahl ordnen, so dass Übersicht gewahrt wird? Wie kann man die Methoden beschreiben, so dass sie miteinander vergleichbar werden?

Social work, in its capacity as both science and profession, recognises a practically unmanageable multitude of methods, procedures and techniques. The many components of this multitude are either borrowed or derived from related sciences and professions, developed from social work theory or arose from the history of the profession applied.

The nature and variety in portrayal of this multitude is as complex as the sheer magnitude of the multitude itself. Contradictions occur in existing literature when attempts are undertaken to classify  the various methods, procedures and techniques in relation to one another, as also occur when describing these latter, with regard to the structure of those descriptions. Following the system of the respective publications seems to be the rule, as opposed to serving the supposedly intended purpose of being a systematic representation of application knowledge in this science and profession.

The above purpose is exactly that upon which this dissertation is focussed, answering questions such as: Why are methods of such importance in social work? What frame of reference can connect these methods to the science and its profession? Upon which metatheory, ethical principles and social work theory are they based? Which methods exist in social work? How can the multitude be organised  to obtain a comprehensive overview? How can these methods be described in order to be consistently comparable?
